Regardless of who you're voting for (no secret who I support), make sure your voice is HEARD.

A great and exciting VRS opportunity dropped in my lap today! It's not solidified, but I expect to know for sure in the next few days.

Many years ago, after a particularly painful breakup (now gleefully referred to as "dodging THAT bullet"), I decided to slow down and take stock of my life. After clawing my way out of debt, among other things, I was determined to put to the test the rosy old saw "you learn something new every day." Each night as I willed myself to sleep, I would assess what I learned that day.
Some days, it's how to spot Cassiopeia in the night sky; other days, it's that your friend is allergic to nuts.
It was an interesting and insightful exercise, but after a year, I fell out of the habit. Oh, sure, it crops up from time to time, and always fills me with wonderment.
Today, in a mere short hours, I learned TWO things:
1. BE FLEXIBLE
It's a word that not too many people throw in my direction. I'm over-scheduled, overly respectful of deadlines, and my weekends are jam-packed weeks in advance.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, today was supposed to be devoted to suckering some muscle into accompanying me in a rental van to re-stock my booth with large pieces. Whoops, rain delay. OK, flexible: backup plan is either go north to Baltimore or south to Culpeper on a shopping spree for the booth. Just in case, I also loaded up some smalls so that I could at least spiff the booth if I happened to be out that way (since it's an hour away) and pick up my bi-weekly check.
First, however, I decided to re-scan the listed estate sales, to see if anything had flown under my radar. Sure enough, a pitiful 2-line ad had escaped my notice—a mere 5 blocks from my home. Hmmm. I'll swing by on my way out of town.
YOWZA! The dudes running it are also Big Flea vendors (mid-century stuff), so wanted to offload this decidedly un-mid-century estate cheaply. I spent my weekend budget at this sale, so exercised flexibility and stayed home to organize after purchasing:
Instant ancestors and a panoramic photo (turn of the century coastal Massachusetts).
Another ouija board (!), 2 cottage oil paintings (both entitled "My Dream Garden" and signed), baby shoes, doll head, and porcelain piano box. The yellow message board was a garbage-day find I got downtown on my lunch break!
2. CHECK ALL ANGLES BEFORE YOU BUY
We’ve all made this rookie mistake, but as a profligate
estate-sale shopper, I should know better. Then again, a $10 pricetag on a
piece of furniture will blind even the most cautious shopper.
This cute b/w bookcase doesn't necessarily dovetail with my style, but at the very least it could serve as a showcase for smalls. It was buried in the basement, shoved into a corner. We hustled it upstairs and only when I went to load it into my car did I notice:
A porno bookcase???? Amongst all my twee old-lady wares? Eh, I’ll paint over the offending parts and no one will ever know.
Unless you want it this way…..
P.S. Don't ASK what's going on with Typepad's whack paragraph spacing. Sorry for the inconsistency....

I'm 200% certain I cannot survive the next 10 days. All my neighbors and I had a seafood feast tonight and were planning our "11.04.08 Red Turns Blue" election-night party (which we hold every 4 years). We made an executive decision this time that we will NOT (although I can't swear it) attempt Inaugural Ball tickets (in case you don't know, although they're a blast, they involve long lines and a cash bar), but instead opt for a schmancy downtown super-swanky dinner for our own celebration, after attending the inaugural parade (with kids in tow, this time, since they now have young kids). We could be overly optimistic, but a girl can dream, right?

I hit 4 estate sales this morning, but got suprisingly little for my diligence:

Some of this post shouldn't come as a surprise to even a novice, but I'm putting it out there in an effort to be thorough.

Yes, against my better judgement, I went to a yard sale today. I'd gone to an estate sale earlier, and it was sooooo much further than I'd thought, so decided to go to a yard sale I saw a sign for. OK, the sign said "Antiques and Good Stuff, 11-3", which decidedly piqued my interest. I got there at 2 with little hope of anything good left. To my surprise, they weren't kidding! I would've bought everything (except the kayak), but it was a little more "primitive" than I sell in my booth.

Oh.My.Lord. Have you inadvertantly come upon something at a sale that blew you away?

I'm in no way an expert on estate sales, but I must admit I've encountered my share: the good, the bad, and (as they say) the ugly. I go nearly every week. To be honest, living in a major metropolitan area greatly enhances the experience. Living in a hub of world travelers also helps, as well as a high-density and varied population. Them's the breaks, but they're MY breaks. I'm eternally grateful.
Where the survivors of the deceased cannot agree to the disposition of tangible property, a court may order those goods to be sold in an estate sale with the proceeds to be divided between the survivors. Such a sale and division may also be mandated in the will of the deceased." {totally cribbed from Wikipedia}
