My Worlds Are Collapsing (in a fortuitous way)

Now that I'm the only person left in my department (at my big-grrrl job), one of my duties is finding all the artwork for my newspaper. Late yesterday afternoon, I got a photo request for a story involving the liquidation of the American Red Cross' warehouse in Lorton, VA. Ho hum, big deal. Wait, what? They're having an internet AUCTION?!?!?! Whoa Nelly!

I calmly requested the photos and then spent the better part of last night (OK, until 2:30 a.m.) on the auction site bidding, bidding, bidding. I'm assuming the link won't work now, and I apologize for holding out on you guys, but I know what vultures we all are. With a journalistic heads-up, I am duty-bound to investigate myself before willy-nilly posting about it on my blog. I also had to ensure that I actually WON some stuff to make my day job palatable.

Our story is focusing on the "quirky" items being offered (a hookah pipe?!?), but it had loads of traditional RC items: ephemera/photos, handbooks, signage, and oh-my-lord the uniforms. It was 14 PAGES of beauty, mostly dating back 70 years.

But, I got me some books. A LOT of books. A whole shelf-full for 0.06 cents. And another one for under $2.00. Succor, indeed. And vindication for yesterday's bust.

P.S. Despite trying, I didn't get the amazing vintage paper towels at the top of the post. They went for $15 apiece, if I recall. I did, however, get some cool photos and assorted ephemera, which I'll show real photos of once I pick them up next week. The suspense is killing me!
