I have a typical love/hate relationship with annual year-end In/Out Hot/Not lists. I take a perverse glee in seeing pet peeves deemed OUT, and an equal dread in seeing trumped-up seemingly media-generated "trends" deemed IN. This week's Washington Post's list didn't disappoint on either front. The odd thing is that I don't read these as crib notes for trends I need to keep my eye on; I tend to look at them for validation. Either that, or just amusement.
OUT: Civil War re-enactors, quinoa, and hoarding. IN: Pinterest, naps, and duct tape. Now we're talking!
All this got me to thinking: what do I fervently hope I never see again in 2012 and beyond? Behold:
My sister can readily tell you that there is a long list of things that skeeve me out, but these are the latest ones (in the vintage category). If I never see another glove mold, owl, or nut cup, it'll be too soon. With my luck, my next estate sale will have all three, surrounded (of course) by a sea of Wade figurines.
The most disturbing thing about the Post's list: flea-market chic has been deemed OUT, in favor of Scandinavian rustic. But what does the Post know? They also deemed etsy OUT, which is patently ridiculous.
Do y'all have any vintage trends or items that you feverishly hope are on the way out? I'd love to hear them. And no fair baiting me by listing suitcases and typewriters....

LOL- I was just thinking how I'd like a glove mold or two. preferably wood. One womans junk...

French macarons are out for the new year. Layer cake is in.
No glove molds seen around thrift shops here. But way too many owls. As for Scandinavian rustic-that describes my entire family.

Scandinavian Rustic.....really? Out this year everything whitewashed - enough already.
In next year, I hope it's industrial repurposed. At least that is one fun area I want to focus on. Happy junking in 2012!
I'm going to a big sale on Jan 1, starting the year out right.

Still lovin' my glove molds, but only 'cause I got 'em for $10 a pop at Warrenton last year.
I'm pretty sick of everything having to be "French". Oh, and owls, too. They skeeve me out, too.
Thank you again for putting my photos in your fabulous calendar, always an honor!
Happy New Year!
XOXO,
Anne

This has nothing to do with junk/vintiques, but I strongly wish that men/boys wearing baggy pants that show their underpants would be OUT! Also rap "music", unless it's Christian - I confess I love Shai Linne :)
As far as stuff is concerned, I would like to see 70's style decor that was ugly the first time around be AUF!

I agree with the owls. I have a few that come out at Halloween in flock mode, but then go back in the box. Owls are everywhere on Etsy--entire Treasuries are filled with owls.
I live in Texas, and Frida Kahlo and Day of the Dead stuff is WAY overdue for a rest.
I'm ready to see vendors continue (and even speed up) the move from "chippy white" furnitue, unless it is original to the piece. Nothing in my deco scheme stays white because I do dog rescue. I'm ready for lots of tactile color and oddities--the Indian "health" posters I saw today at "Tesoro" in Austin are wonderful, as were the Central American Textiles.

I must confess I like the chippy whites but prefer to see them mixed in with rustic and naturals instead of lace and roses.
I have to agree with Anne...I don't like seeing the word french (used loosely) and the price raised because of it!
Just got my new calendar and LOVE it!!

etsy out? i have two stores on etsy and i am kickin butt! wonder who writes these lists?

I would love to see fake repurposed decor on the official out list. Like the Restoration Hardware "vintage" monopoly game for $149.00. It doesn't say where it's being made but I'm pretty sure they aren't employing the good people of Germantown, Pennsylvania to make their reproduction! Or ornaments made with newly printed vintage music paper. Oh, and one last one, the $17,000 devotion charm necklace from Dolce and Gabbana. On page 113 InStyle Dec. 2011. And no, I did not add an extra zero or two by mistake.
If etsy's out where will Pottery Barn and all the rest get their ideas?

I would bet that almost all of the new "vintage look" stuff is made in China. That's just sad.
I still love chippy white stuff, but I like it mixed with black and gray pieces.

Pinterest, naps, and duct tape...cool! The only thing I can think to add to your list is seeing the exact same kitchen over and over again in magazines...I got it already...white, vintage/industrial mix.
I'm also here thank you for the giveaway from Colleen...love my Vintage Rescue Squad calendar.

Ditto what Julie said about same kitchen look over & over in the decorating mags. Stainless steel kitchen appliances should be out. They look so cold to me.

Ooh, I know what should REALLY be out - garage sale type junk at the antique mall where my booths are. It's against the rules, but many dealers seem to get by with it anyway. Clothing is supposed to be either vintage or handcrafted, and I see all kinds of crap that does not fit those categories. Also the brightly colored plastic baby junk should be OUT!!! Ah, I feel better now...

Is it wrong of me to Hope that EVERYTHING I LOVE is OUT so that I can get it more reasonably priced? *Winks* I buy what I Love, regardless of trends, so I prefer what I Love NOT to be Hot and thus suddenly overpriced into the stratosphere!
You sent my Calendar so quickly and I really appreciated that since we had so many post-its attached to our 2011 Calendar for what is already scheduled for this Month! *LOL* LOVE the Calendar, great job with the choice of Images and all of the Show Listings.
Happy New Year from the Arizona Desert... Dawn... The Bohemian

Is any one else tired of mustaches already? I am ready for something new to take the place of owls, too.
What seems to really be in is buying green by using vintage and flea market finds, I don't know how the Post can think that trend is on it's way out unless they are referring to the imitation vintage bandwagon that so many commercial retailers have joined lately.
Does this new interest have any thing to do with Pottery Barns latest furniture lines?
